Crowds Come Back!

Jump Straight to Results

At last, the long-awaited day, when crowds return to cheer on their favourites at the local harness race meeting. Broadheath Common, Presteigne has played host to trotting for many decades and Sunday saw another entertaining afternoon of racing, shared between the Wales & Border Counties and the Wales & West Harness Racing Associations.

The first race after the initial qualifiers was the Wales & Border Counties Novice race which culminated with a close finish, the impressive Half Penny owned by long-time supporter Ken Lloyd of New Radnor, driven by trainer Andrew Hardwick claimed first prize from the fast finishing Beg For Mercy (Tromans, Newcastle Emlyn) while on his season’s debut Cardigan Boy (Gale, Llanelli) was third.

In the W&BC Grade B race David Duggan from Howey used all his experience to dominate the race, Lakeview Meg led from the starting gate to the finish tape for the popular Llanbister owners Steve & Kate Lewis, closing on the line was Dernol Yankee (Wozencraft, Llangurig) while the reliable Whiskey and Water (Morgan, Knighton) was third.

The Bevan family from Llanddewi have been supporters of Welsh trotting for many years, and a fortnight ago their flying grey Ayr Hero showed a phobia for traveling in the box and so had to stay at home. This week after travelling to the races in Steve Lewis, Llanbister’s lorry, the fourteen year old Ayr Hero partnered by Lynn Boxhall shot to the lead in the back straight and maintained that position so providing two back to back wins for the lorry travelling companions. In second was the compact Rhyds Design (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) while last week’s winner Happy Hands (Lloyd, Painscastle) was third.

In the first of the Wales & West races Highbrooks Onyx driven by trainer Colin Bevan from Llanwrtyd won much to the delight of owners Carl (Happy) Evans from Newport and Sue Harris from Merthyr, in second was Caenwood Luckylady (Price, Presteigne) with Scoots Ace (Richards, Tregaron) third.

The next race provided another win for the Bevan stable from Llanwrtyd when daughter Julie Phillips partnered Wellfield Rock (Davies, Glanamman) to success ahead of Ring Em In (Davies, Llangammarch) and in third was the aptly named Dare to Dream (Gleed, Leominster).

Race 6 was a Wales & West pace with local horse Caenwood Rocknroll owned trained and driven by Julian Price from Presteigne taking top honours ahead of K and M Redpandana (Wright, Midlands) while Landa Dreams (Preston, Dilwyn) was third.

Races 7 and 8 were W&BC nursery races with Ellavafella driven by owner Rachel Bevan from Maesmynis winning the first and Fold Allstar on his debut in the racing world winning for the Perks family from Presteigne.

The next race, was the W&BC Baby Novice with Rattlesnake Rosie owned trained and driven by David Arrowsmith from Bronllys securing an impressive win, tightly followed across the line by three horses, C U Salou (Hawkes, Lyonshall) claimed second while the gigantic Dernol Peter Pan (Boxhall, Brecon) was third.

Race 11 was a Wales & West pace where Chaos Theory owned and trained by Emma Langford from Llanbister and driven by Rhun Wilson won from Cheeky Devil (Evans, Newport) while Ozzy (Dyer, Cardiff) was third.

The last race of the day was won by Wellfield Warlock driven by Michael O’Mahony from St Asaph for the Connors family from Cardiff in second was Lord Sugar (Langford, Onibury) while Mythical Arion (Davies, Huntington) was third.

So after a lovely day, where we saw the welcome return of spectators and bookmakers to the race meeting, we look forward to a season of nearer normality. The next fixture will be at the all-weather track near Ammanford next Sunday June 27th starting at 1pm
