On Sunday 6th June Welsh trotting returned to its roots, with a race meeting on Broadheath Common near Presteigne. Two committees, Wales & Border Counties and Wales & West staged a joint meeting with their races interspersed to provide an enjoyable afternoon for the competitors, which was held ‘behind closed doors’ due to Covid-19 restrictions.

After the Wales & West Qualifiers the competitive racing began with W & B C Novice in which Beg For Mercy owned trained and driven by Mathew Tromans & family from Newcastle Emlyn claimed first prize from Half Penny (Lloyd, New Radnor) while Alibis Dream (Lloyd, Gladestry) was third.

In the W & BC Grade B Dernol Yankee driven by Richard Staples won for owner Edward Wozencraft from Llangurig while last week’s winner Ayrosmith (Williams-Pugh, Brecon) was second and Lakeview Meg and owner Steve Lewis from Llanbister was third.

Happy Hands with owner Stephen Lloyd from Painscastle on board went one better than last week to win the W & BC Grade A from the backmarker Ontop Shouder Cuda (Bevan, Llanddewi) while the long time leader Rhyds Design (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) had to make do with third.

The next race was the first W & W race of recent non-winners with the spoils going to Llwyns Springer owned by Carol Jenkins from Tregaron and steered home by Emrys Thomas from Llanbister for trainer Emma Langford. In second was Dare to Dream (Gleed, Leominster) while Ontop Apachy (Davies, Wolverhampton) was third.

The W & W Trot followed with Catalane Du Canet driven by Steven Williams from Pencader for the owner/trainer partnership of Williams and Thomas from Llandeilo first over the line in front of Black Williams (Wilson, Llanybydder) while Espoir Lila (Randall, Ammanford) was third.

Two W & BC Nursery races followed with the first won by Ellavafella and Andrew Bevan from Maesmynis while the second was won by Olympics for the Boxhall-Hardwick team from Brecon.

The W & BC Baby Novice race was won by Talavary Crown with driver Stephen Lloyd enjoying his second win of the day steering him home for the Greenway family from Michaelchurch Eskley, in second place was Bethany (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) while Dernol Peter Pan (Boxhall, Brecon) was third.

The W & W 26-39 Pace was won by the Dyer family from Cardiff’s Ozzy driven by Angela Dyer, in second was Manhattan Gangster (Baddams, Southampton) while Coalford Dude (Wakefield, Newent) was third.

The final race of the day was the W & W 39-66 Pace with the win going to Chaos Theory owned by Langford Llanbister and driven by Rhun Wilson, while Ithon Orbit and Matthew Lewis from Shrewsbury was second and Nemesis (Price, Brecon) was third.

Grass trotting racing continues in a fortnight when we return to Broadheath common. Wales & Borders and Wales & West sharing the afternoon’s racing, but for the first time this season, because of the relaxation of restrictions, there will be the welcome return of owners and spectators. The meeting will be run under the Track and Trace system in order to comply with regulations. Welcome back on Sunday June 20th with racing starting at 1pm.
