Horses back on the track!

Jump Straight to Results

The first racing results of the season. What a joy it was to see horses back on the track, racing for fun. Although the racing was ‘behind closed doors’ there was still a good atmosphere as Wales and Border harness racing, held their race meeting after their hosts the Amman Valley Trotting Club ran their racing series.

The first race as usual was the Nursery race for young inexperienced horses and this week it was the aptly named Olympics who was first over the line in the hands of Andrew Hardwick from Brecon while Rattlesnake Rosie with David Arrowsmith, from Bronllys was second and Begwyns Trust and Robin Lloyd from Painscastle was third.

The Novice race was a good race where Alibis Dream (Lloyd, Gladestry) with David Arrowsmith in the seat looked set for a comfortable win as they powered up the back straight but Beg For Mercy (Tromans, Newcastle Emlyn) was making inroads to claim second while the fast finishing Lawless (Elder, Blaencelyn) was third.

A full compliment of 9 runners in the grade B provided another good race with the speedy Ayrosmith (Williams, Brecon) swept into the lead with a lap to go and won decisively for driver Lynne Boxhall from Brecon in Ayr Ontario (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) ran on to be second while Whiskey and Water and Fran Morgan from Knighton was third.

The Grade A provided another entertaining race as Happy Hands with owner Stephen Lloyd from Painscastle at the controls swept into the lead on the final back straight but long time lead Rhyds Design owned by the Weigel family from Llanddewi Velfrey and driven by Mathew Tromans would not be denied, and launched a successful challenge down the home straight to reach the winning line in front, with Ayr Hero (Bevan, Llanddewi) in third.

The racing concluded with the Baby Novice race in which the back marker Half Penny owned by long time supporter Ken Lloyd from New Radnor showed he had not lost any of his speed during the year away from the track, as Andrew Hardwick steered him to the winning line in front of Bethany (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) and Talavary Crown (Greenway, Michaelchurch Eskley). Half Penny now moves up a division into the Novice class.

So the end of a successful day of racing with next week’s fixture, which is again ‘behind closed doors’ at Broadheath Common, Presteigne when Wales & West and Wales & Border hold a joint meeting on Sunday June 6th
