On a bright sunny but cold day the all weather track at Tairgwaith on Saturday was in superb condition for an outstanding race meeting. All sections had to be divided which led to three exciting finals to finish the day.

The two nursery races gave a welcome opportunity to advance the young horses on the track. The first was won by Blackmountain Jess owned by the Morris family from Llanigon and trained and driven by Derek Pritchard from Rhosgoch. Dreamcatcher (Langford Ammanford) was second and on her first appearance Ithon Hannah (Bufton Dolau) was third. The experienced Greenhill Megan (Morgan Rhymney) took top honours in the second race ably piloted by her trainer Andrew Hardwick from Brecon, the impressive Hold the Cards (Williams Pencader) was second while Ceirion Sion with young driver Amber Hyslop was third.

The Novice heats gave a thrilling double for driver Stephen Williams from Shrewsbury as Ithon Eagle (Neville Welshpool) took the first race while his own little Katie Blue was first past the post in the second heat. Sunnyside Geoff (Clark Brecon) ran on to be second to Eagle with Fold American (Perks Presteigne) in third. Saunders Playboy (Pritchard Rhosgoch) qualified as runner up in the second heat as did Blackfield Baz (Booth Ammanford) and Red Adair (Harries, Merthyr).

East of Eden, perhaps Ruth’s favourite inmate, gave Derek Pritchard added another win in the first heat of the Grade B while last week’s winner Vyrnwy Chef (Barton Clunderwen) was second and Chinatown Maori (Jones, Llanllwni) was third. In the second heat C U Boykin (Hitchcock, Haverfordwest) led past the post from Serenity (Jones, Llanllwni) with Coalford Time (Harries, Merthyr) and Blackfield Willy (Barton Clunderwen) also qualifying for the final.

Bon Bethan (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) showed her tremendous character as she sped over the line in front with Louisa Myers in the seat, last week’s winner Wellfield Xpense (Langford Ludlow) was in second, new recruit Wilbro Douglas (Lloyd-Evans Tregaron) was third and this being the faster heat the fourth horse Mahogany Duke (Edmunds Porthcawl) also qualified. In the second heat Live the Dream (Langford Ammanford) swept to victory for driver Melanie with Vodka Express (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) second, and on his season’s debut, Merrington Man (Thomas Rhymney) was third.

The Baby Novice races followed with Alpine Heights moving up to the Novices with a win in the first, an enthusiastic Brent Ladek doing the steering, while Fold Eventful (Perks Presteigne) was second and a season’s first timer Tricksters Dream (Flint Porthcawl) was third. Wayne Knox went one better in the second race as he steered the other Perks Presteigne entry Fold Be Nimble into first place, another horse who will run in the Novice section next time. Faraway (Atherton Narberth) on his first outing this season was second, while Wellfield Inspired (Griffiths Pontardawe) was third.

The finals provided the icing on a rich racing cake. The Novice final was the first with Stephen Williams from Shrewsbury having the pick of Ithon Eagle or Katie Blue, his head dictated Ithon Eagle and he was not disappointed as this talented horse claimed a well fought for victory for his new owners the Neville family from Welshpool. Sunnyside Geoff (Clarke Brecon) again followed him in while little Katie Blue in the reliable hands of Alan Peters was third. Ithon Eagle now moves into open class racing. Last week’s graduate the little East of Eden was not overawed in the new company and illustrated that small and good do go together as she gave owner driver Derek Pritchard from Rhosgoch another win, while Vyrnwy Chef (Barton Clunderwen) had to settle for second with Serenity (Jones Llanllwni) in third. Bon Bethan (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) has been one of the most consistent horses for some years and showed she is still a force to be reckoned with especially when driven by daughter Louisa Myers as she won the Grade A final from a much improved Merrington Man (Thomas Rhymney) while the delightful grey Live the Dream (Langford Ammanford) was third.

So as the season resumes at its usual weekly interval Knighton play host to racing next Saturday May 22nd when the grass specialists will be showing their credentials.
