After a week of uncertainty wondering if the 2008 season would follow a similar pattern to last year with July meetings being a wash-out there was great jubilation that Severn Valley races went ahead on Saturday. In fact the day was fine, perhaps a bit blustery, but the afternoon’s racing on a wonderful open half mile track provided the large enthusiastic crowd with entertainment ‘par excelance’.

The first nursery race gave C U Boykin and Debbie Hitchcock from Haverfordwest a good start to the day while the weekly improving Quicksilver (Bill Hughes Cwmbach) was second and Seren Penlan who showed great improvement in her behaviour to be third, for owner Robin Lloyd from Painscastle. In the second race the experienced Inshallah has helped young driver Rachel Berry serve her apprenticeship in the sport winning from another young driver Gareth Bevan from Builth with Ithon Express while local horse Little Man (Wozencraft Llangurig) was third.

The first Novice race gave a popular win to little Katie Blue and Stephen Williams from Shrewsbury while Miss Muddy Paws (Davies Huntington) was second and Time Traveller (Bevan Llanddewi) was third. Maple star the impressive dark mare belonging to the Prosser family from Libanus won the second race driven as usual by her trainer Lorna Perks from Presteigne, in second was Hilltop Jimmy (Williams Brecon) who improves with each appearance while the talented trotter Belleheir (Ladek Cleobury Mortimer) was third Maple Star now graduates into open racing.

Blackfield Willy raced to victory in the first heat of the Grade B with Robert Barton from Clunderwen, with Bon Beti (Evans-Jones Rhymney) in second and Hilltop Flame (Lewis Presteigne) third. Unfortunately tragedy overshadowed this race as Harry Penlan collapsed and died on the home straight, sympathy is extended to his owner Robin Lloyd from Painscastle, Harry like many of W&BC horses are almost part of the family and so will be missed by regular race goers. In the second heat Young Brett continued his winning ways with owner John Peters on board, in second was Falcon Lobell (Davies Huntington) and Vodka Express was third.

The first heat of the Grade A gave Obi-Wan-Kenobi (Williams Llanafan) another impressive win from dependable Double Top (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) with the ever reliable Scoot along Sam (Powell Merthyr Cynog) in third. Bon Bethan (Llanddewi Velfrey) and Louisa Myers can seem to do no wrong as they collected another win from Jeffrey (Lloyd Kington) and the local mare Believe (Crowther Llanidloes) who was third. Another lady in top form is Melanie Langford who piloted the back marker Purple Rain (Edwards, Bromfield) to victory in the third heat, following was Master T J (Gwatkin Evenjobb) with Boomerang (Peters Welshpool) in third.

New owners the Price family from Guilsfield had something to shout about as Glan Master claimed victory in the first Baby Novice race driven as always by trainer Alan Peters from Welshpool, in second was Sandside Cash (Rogers Asterton) and the Llangurig horse Ithon Artist with Edward Wozencraft was third. New recruit Chinatown Maori (Jones Llanllwni) continued his rise up the racing ladder with a win in the second Baby Novice race beating, first time in the babies, My Immortal (Evans Brecon) and Sam the Man (Tromans Newcastle Emlyn). In the third race it was Duggan’s Domino (Gwatkin Evenjobb) who looks all set to move through the grades like his mother Falcon Lobell, in first place, C U Boykin (Hitchcock, Haverfordwest) another having his first run in the babies was second while the experienced looking Mahogany Jake (Evans Newcastle Emlyn) was third. Incredibly the three winners in the Baby Novice section this week now move up into the even ‘hotter’ Novice grade.

It was lovely to see a competitive saddle race as the five ladies urged their mounts around the track it was Emma Layton who seems to have developed a good relationship with Blackfield Willy (Barton Clunderwen) who went over the winning line in front while Classic Day (Williams Merthyr) was second and Handsome Butch (Bevan & Sargeant Builth) who is new to the race was third. The six furlongs followed when Scoot 66 and Mark Bevan Llanddewi did scoot along to win from Ithon Ace (Williams Shrewsbury) and Swifty (Jones, Ammanford). It was the ladies day as Maple Star and Lorna Perks took top honours in their race beating Family Circle (Barton Clunderwen) driven by Louisa Myers and Inshallah with Rachel Berry in their first ‘proper’ race.

The day ended with the Grade B final in which Young Brett (Peters Upper Longwood) revelled in the long back straight where he motored from last place into the lead to repeat his win a fortnight ago, at long last he looks on a level with his younger brother Boomerang and he will now graduate to the Grade A, in second was Vodka Express (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) who looks likely to graduate shortly while Bon Beti (Evans-Jones Rhymney) claimed third. The finale of the day was the Grade A and the ladies in form were Louisa Myers and the dark mare Bon Bethan (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) they are a formidable team this year and there was no answer as they swept to the front followed by the class horses from the back, Purple Rain (Edwards Bromfield) and Boomerang (Peters Welshpool).
