Although Wales & Border racing was near Cardigan bay this bank holiday weekend the weather was decidedly not for seaside enjoyment, the track was windswept but there was very little rain and as usual the horses showed no concern for such mundane matters. They produced good racing on the lovely open track, one of the favourite venues for Ceredigion racing.

The first race of the day saw lady drivers take all three places at the head of affairs, Janet Thomas from Tregroes with her own True Grit first with Debbie Hitchcock from Haverfordwest and C U Boykin in second while Melanie Langford and Wellfield Inspired (Edwards Bromfield) was third. In the second race Melanie took first place driving Dafydd Boy (Harries Llanllwni) on his debut this season, while Wayne Elder with his own Satelite was second and Jason Munro an ex junior recently returned to the track with his old faithful Leprechaun (Chilcott Bridgend) was third.

The Novice race was the next on the card when Briwyns Badlands driven by owner trainer Richard Williams from Tumble was first over the line beating Ayr Force One (Evans Newcastle Emlyn) into second with Handsome Butch (Bevan & Sargeant Builth Wells) in third.

In the first heat of the Grade B Louisa Myers the nurse from Bristol steered the Weigel family favourite Bon Bethan first past the post with Forgeside Jack (Walker Gwernogle) in second and Vyrnwy Chef (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) in third. Wellfield Xpense with last season’s leading driver Melanie Langford from Ludlow took top honours in the second heat with Bretts Delight (Evans Newtown) running on well to be second and last week’s winner Scoot 66 (Bevan Llanddewi) was third.

In the Grade A front runner Master Chance with owner Wayne Elder from Blaencelyn clocked up a significant win at this race meeting which has very special associations for the Elder family. In second was Live the Dream (Langford Pontardawe) while Ithon Ace (Williams Shrewsbury) was third.

In the first Baby Novice it was little Katie Blue who notched up her first formal win for owner Stephen Williams from Shrewsbury while Ithon Artist and Edward Wozencraft from Llangurig was second and Hilltop Polly (Gittins Welshpool) was third. In the second race Sam the Man produced a professional run for owner Mathew Tromans from Newcastle Emlyn winning from Glan Master (Price Guilsfield) in second with local horse Lowri Dillon (Jenkins Llanrhystud) in third.

The ladies race followed, Lynne Boxhall on a catch drive leading affairs from the start on the grey Ayr Force One belonging to James Evans from Newcastle Emlyn but back marker Melanie Langford on Terry Edwards’ Purple Rain powered up the home straight to clinch victory while the Barton family horse from Clunderwen Family Circle ably driven by Emma Langford was third.

The finale of the day was the Grade B final when the Llanddewi Velfrey mare Bon Bethan and her young pilot Louisa Myers repeated their heat success forcing Forgeside Jack (Walker Gwernogle) into second place with Wellfield Xpense (Langford Ludlow) third.

The next race meeting will be at Leominster on Saturday May 31st 2 pm start, when hopefully there will be more seasonal weather.
