Almeley Racing

Jump Straight to Results

The races on Saturday on the glorious Almeley track had a fine entry of horses and there was some superb finishes. The meeting had straight races which gave competitors another chance in the extra, more light hearted races.

There were two nursery races with Janet Thomas the farmer’s wife from Tregroes claiming victory in both, the first with her youngster Hyar Truly who was on remedial training while in the second her other homebred Hyar Friction continues to impress.

In the first Novice race Morning Breeze with Derek Pritchard in the seat sped from the gate to dictate for dedicated owner Alan Jones from Brecon in second was Ook whos Coming (Evans, Brecon) while Beg for Mercy (Tromans, Newcastle Emlyn) was third. Turn the Paige (Miles, Merthyr) driven as usual by Janet Thomas from Tregroes took the second Novice race narrowly beating Ithon Legacy (Hardwick, Llanbister) and C U Maggie (Bevan, Llanddewi).

Janet Thomas registered a back to back double when she steered Immortal Breeze (Williams Llanafan) to victory in the first Grade B race just ahead of Greenhill Lilian (Thomas, Rhymney) while on his first run in the open class Talavary Activator (Roberts, Dinmore) was third. Tillies Laag with owner Mark Evans from Brecon had a convincing win in the second Grade B race coming home ahead of Rhyds Panalulah (Gething, Ewyas Harold) and Enter the Dragon (Harrison, Onibury).

In the first Grade A the ever improving Camden Callen driven by Mel Langford for her dad Bob Langford from Ystradgynlais, ran a superb race and just held on by a nose from the fast finishing Saunders Mach 3 (Bevan, Llanddewi) with Ithon Inmate (Price, Brecon) in third. Second Affair (Thomas, Rhymney) ran from the gate to lead throughout the second Grade A race with Mark Evans at the controls beating the likeable Habberley Playboy (Johns & Gittins, Shrewsbury) in second, while the grey Ayr Hero (Bevan, Llanddewi) was third.

With only one Baby Novice the large entry was always going to present a challenge to the punters and it was the much improved Pegasus Dream owned by the Meaney family from Merthyr and driven by Lynn Boxhall that just got the verdict from Bets All Off (Sargeant, Newbridge) after another impressive run while long time leader Ithon JR (James, Dorstone) was third.

Seven ladies lined up in the saddle race and provided a superb display of the traditional sport, Mel Langford proved she is just as dynamic in the saddle as on the sulky seat as she propelled last week’s winner Habberley Playboy (Johns & Gittins, Shrewsbury) to a repeat win ahead of the experienced Myfanwy Miles on Immortal Breeze (Williams, Llanafan) while Rhyds Design (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) ran on well to be third.

This week there were only two entries in the Junior but still the camera was needed to separate them as they swept over the winning line, Ystwyth Valley owned by the Duggan family from Llangunllo with granddaughter Issy John in the saddle won by a small margin from Woodstone Jingo (Meaney & Harris, Merthyr) ridden by Ellie Tromans.

In the Dash Tillies Laag with owner Mark Evans from Brecon in the seat claimed her second win of the day just ahead of Greenhill Lillian (Thomas, Rhymney) while Ayr Ontario (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) was third.

The next race was a mile and a half in memory of the committee chairman Vernon Davies who had sadly passed away earlier this year. With a full entry of nine runners it was an exciting race to watch. It was Second Affair claiming her second win of the day for the Thomas family of Rhymney, while driver Mark Evans from Brecon had his fourth winner, just coming home in front of the Novice Ithon Legacy (Hardwick, Llanbister) with the baby Luminite (Atherton-Rees, Narberth) in third.

The final race of the day was the Bookmakers’ Free For All and over the last few years Ithon Inmate has made this race his own, and this year he kept his unbeaten record for the delighted Price family from Brecon driven as always by trainer Derek Pritchard from Rhosgoch, in second was last week’s hero Lakeside Pan (Elder, New Quay) with Ayr Hero (Bevan, Llanddewi) running another good race to claim third.

Next week we go towards the run-down of the season with non penalty racing which provides the finale to the day at Beulah Show starting at 4pm.
