Ladies Dominate at Ammanford Racing
Mid Wales racing for the second week running was bathed in sunshine at the all-weather Tairgwaith track near Ammanford, although there was a considerable breeze to help keep the horses cool. The season has started with some good racing as the newcomers show their paces against the old timers.
In the nursery race the two more experienced horses provided a good insight into possible future battles but it was last week’s winner Greenhill Gus driven by Mark Evans from Brecon for the breeder owner trainer Thomas family from Rhymney who came home just ahead of Luminite (Atherton-Rees, Narberth) while first time on the track Hyar Friction (Thomas, Tregroes) was not disgraced in third.
The novice race was the next on the card where Mel Langford drove a waiting race with her own Enter the Dragon, but when she produced him up the home straight, he responded as his name would suggest, they swept across the finish just ahead of The Chancer (Jones, Llanllwni) while new recruit Ayr Major (Eggerton, Norton Canon) was a close third.
As usual with so many horses off the gate in the Grade B it was a dash to the first corner and although Second Affair held the inside it was Rhyds Backchat (Elder Blaencelyn) with Mel Langford at the controls who persisted up the back straight to lead at the bell, they continued to press their advantage and claimed a memorable victory to reverse last week’s positions with Second Affair (Morgan, Rhymney) in second and Habberley Haste (Lloyd, New Radnor) running on into third.
Although ten yards worst off from last week’s win the flying grey Scoobys Dream owned by Bev Williams-Pugh from Brecon and driven by his trainer Lynn Boxhall swept to the front, the long striding crowd favourite dictated the race with the same result as last week, Camden Callen (Langford, Ystradgynlais) in second while the Hitchcock trained Ontop Mcardle (E Meredith) was third.
The last race of the afternoon was the Baby Novice in which the Williams-Pugh family claimed a memorable double as the powerful Garth Vader again driven by Lynne Boxhall took first place from last week’s winner Talavary Zara (Jones, Evenjobb) while first time out C U Maggie (Bevan, Llanddewi) was third.
So it really was lady’s day as both Mel Langford and Lynne Boxhall claimed two back to back doubles, only the nursery providing a winning drive for the men, proving trotting is a sport where the ladies are equal to the men.
Next week sees the beginning of the grass season with Knighton races the traditional first meeting. The races are at Monaughty Poeth farm near Knighton on Saturday May 19th starting at 1.30pm.
