Racing Season kicks off in the sun

Jump Straight to Results

Mid Wales racing as always began with the prestigious Llangadog meeting and this year the allweather track at Tairgwaith near Ammanford was bathed in sunshine for a splendid afternoon of racing.

The Nursery race is where young horses begin to learn their trade, making their first tentative steps up the racing ladder. It always provides lots of interest as the punters look for horses which will be hot tips later in the season. It was the homebred youngster first time on the track Greenhill Gus delighting the Thomas family from Rhymney with his debut. In second was the quietly progressing Llwyns Mercy (Collingwood, Huntington) while the wellbred Brywins Duckdown (Hitchcock, Haverfordwest) was third.

The Novice race was the first for the punters and this proved to be an exciting race as the long time leader Meadowland Olympic was overhauled at the beginning of the home straight and Second Affair (Thomas Rhymney) with Mark Evans from Brecon on board flew home in front of newcomer Enter the Dragon (Harison, Onibury) while The Chancer (Hitchcock & Jones, Haverfordwest) ran on to be third.

In the Grade B the striking Meadowland Maverick with owner Ollie Jones from Evenjobb on board surged down the home straight to claim first prize from the hard working Rhyds Backchat (Elder, Blaencelyn) with Habberley Haste (Lloyd, New Radnor) taking third.

It was the old stager Scoobies Dream (Williams, Brecon) who led from the gate in the Grade A, this long-striding grey was a delight to watch, aided and abetted as usual by his dedicated trainer Lynne Boxhall. Despite the efforts of the others he maintained his position, leading over the finishing line much to the delight of his fan club, in second Camden Callen (Langford, Onibury) looking to have returned to fitness, while newcomer Ontop Mcardle (Meredith, Treharris).

In the final race the Baby Novice Talavary Zara with owner Ollie Jones from Evenjobb on board despite her outside draw, was quick off the gate to lead into the first corner. They continued to dominate and came home in fine style ahead of Talavary Zodiac (Staples & Thomas, Merthyr) while Hilltop Recon (Lloyd New Radnor) finished third.

So after a glorious afternoon with some interesting racing, the season moves on to Sunday May 13th at Tairgwaith starting at 1.30pm.
