Ithon Inmate Takes Free For All at Almeley

Jump Straight to Results

Despite a very wet morning Almeley races enjoyed a dry afternoon with some spectacular racing. Straight races ranging from, six furlongs to a mile and a quarter, ensured plenty of variety with the result that the racing kept the committed public enthralled. The track was in superb condition and showed no signs of wear despite the rain early in the day.

Habberley Anne the homebred mare owned and driven by Stephen Williams from Shrewsbury claimed the nursery race ahead of Ladyford John (Duggan Llangunllo) while Camden Lock (Lloyd/Samuel Painscastle with learner Liz Samuel on board was third.

In the first Novice race the homebred Danny Blue surprised some of his supporters by enjoying the conditions and giving owner John Peters from Upper Longwood their first win of the season, in second was Tyssul Pennylane (Broome Bromfield) with Touch of Chaps (Randell Ammanford) in third. George Gentle with owner Zak Lewis from Welshpool at the controls claimed the second Novice from Made in Wales (Evans Red Roses) while Fronfelin Duchess (Lewis Efailwen) was third.

The Grade B was a mile and a quarter this week requiring, horses with stamina as well as speed, For One Night Only proved well equipped with both to notch up another win for the Wilson family from Llanfihangel ar arth with Rhun Wilson in the seat while Arctic Prince (Gwatkin Evenjobb) ran a good race to be second with Hyar Temptation (Thomas Tregroes) in third. In the second Grade B Tillies Larg is another horse looking likely to make the top grade, winning with owner Mark Evans in control, while Beacon Sorcerer (Bevan Llanddewi) was second and Makemeamillionayr (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) was third.

The new grey Ayr Hero (Wilson Llanfihangel ar arth) caused quite a stir winning on his first outing at the beginning of the week and again he romped home with Rhun Wilson, in front of the inimitable Ithon Inmate (Price Brecon) with the other grey Scoobies Dream (Williams Brecon) in third. Best of the Fleet has been threatening to deliver on several occasions lately so it was no surprise as he and owner Matt Lewis from Welshpool claimed their first win of the season ahead of No Mercy (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) while Saorlas Glory (Neville Guilsfield) was third.

The first Baby Novice race went to Turn the Paige driven by Oliver (OJ) Jones for the Perks family from Presteigne in second was Lakeside Glory (Jones Brecon) while Pendragon (Powell Merthyr Cynog) was third. Ook Whose Coming gave Mark Evans from Brecon his second win of the afternoon, coming home in front of Evenwood Thumps Up (Lewis Llanyre) in the second Baby Novice, while Holmes Wildfire (Eggerton Norton Canon) was third.

No Mercy (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) proved what a good horse he is under saddle as he and Jayne Bevan claimed another victory ahead of Forest Surprise (Miles Merthyr) with Habberley Haste (Lloyd New Radnor) in third.

There were five competitors in the Junior race which as usual was fast and furious, the experience of Anna Lewis completed the Lewis family from Welshpool’s three timer as she rode George Gentle to victory in front of returning from injury, Forest Gump (Duggan Llangunllo) with Izzy John in the saddle, in third was Brywins Sweetheart (Marr Ammanford) and Ellie Tromans, while first timer Jessie Samuel from Painscastle on her mother’s Camden Lock and young Ceri Bevan from Llanddewi on Beacon Sorcerer were close behind in the placings.

In the dash Tyssul Pearl with owner Emrys Thomas from Llanbister took advantage of pole position and just managed to finish ahead of the advancing Ayr Ontairo (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) while stable companion Makemeamillionayr was in third. This win now puts Tyssul Pearl into open racing.

The final race of the day was the Bookmakers Free For All eight horses lined up and it proved to be a very good race as Ithon Inmate with the experienced Derek Pritchard at the helm flew off the start and dictated race proceedings, they repelled all challenges to claim another victory for the Price family from Brecon while the up and coming For One Night Only (Wilson Llanfihangel ar arth) was second with stable companion Ayr Hero in third.

So at the end of a roller coaster day when racing looked as if it may become a victim of the weather, sport prospered, proving that racing is fun and all opportunities must be taken especially as there are only three weeks left of the season. Next weekend on Saturday September 10th there is demonstration trotting at Kington Show with racing to conclude Beulah Show starting at 4pm.
