Saddle Focus at Talsarn

Jump Straight to Results

This year at Talsarn races the focus was on the saddle race, which was kindly sponsored by the Evans family from Dihewyd, who a couple of generations ago were much involved in the local trotting. All the races were competitive and provided a good afternoon of traditional entertainment.

In the Nursery race the homebred belonging to the Evans family from Brecon again produced a good run to win from Habberley Anne (Williams Shrewsbury) while Beg for Mercy (Tromans Newcastle Emlyn) was third.

There was only one race in the Novice and Purple Connection ran a superlative race for long time trotting supporters the Williams family from Llanwern with grandson Dale at the controls, in second was Touch of Chaps (Randell, Ammanford) while last week’s winner Made in Wales (Evans Red Roses) was third.

Two heats of the grade B followed, where the well respected Habberley Haste (Lloyd, New Radnor) driven as usual by trainer Andrew Hardwick came in first from lately promoted Rhyds Backchat (Elder Blaencelyn) with the likeable Hyar Temptation (Thomas Tregroes) in third. Habberley Playboy (Johns / Gittins, Shrewsbury) took the second B heat in the hands of trainer Mathew Tromans with the veteran Blackfield Buddy (Barton Clynderwen) still enjoying the sport in second and a rejuvenated Bon Hasty (Collingwood Huntington) in third.

The grade A was a straight race this week which suited the iconic Scoobys Dream (Williams Brecon) who with usual pilot Lynne Boxhall made every post a winning post, they were followed home by No Mercy (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) and Saorlas Glory (Neville & Prices Guilsfield).

The first Baby Novice race was won by the lofty Lakeside Glory (Jones Brecon) guided home by Shane Eggerton with Meadowland Olympic (Evans Newcastle Emlyn) in second and Ceiron Blue Boy (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) in third. By contrast the winner of the second Baby Novice was the diminutive My Amazing Grace (Evans Red Roses) driven as usual by Aled Davies, in second was Holmes Wildfire (Eggerton Norton Canon) with Evenwood Thumps Up (Lewis Llanyre) in third.

Although there were only two entries in the Junior race there was still plenty of excitement as the two friends Anna Lewis on Greenhill Cliff (Williams Brecon) and Ellie Tromans on Brywins Sweetheart (Marr Gorslas) battled for victory, the spoils going to Anna to add to her season’s victories.

The dash is always a popular race and this week was no exception as the striking Ayr Ontario (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) with Louisa Barton in the seat came home in front of short race specialist Jango Fett (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) while Makemeamillionayr (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) was third.

The saddle race was next on the card, this was the feature race of the afternoon, the winner was Meadowland Hasty (Price Brecon) who looks to be returning to his best form under the enthusiastic guidance of Bridget Lewis, with No Mercy (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) in second and Forest Gump (Duggan, Llangunllo) in third.

The last race of the afternoon was the Grade B Final, when ever improving Rhyds Backchat (Elder Blaencelyn) and Mel Langford snatched victory on the line from long time leader Hyar Temptation (Thomas Tregroes) with the old-stager eleven year old Blackfield Buddy (Barton Clynderwen) in third.

The end of a lovely afternoon of racing. Next week the racing takes place at Newbridge on Saturday August 20th starting at 1.30 pm.
