Severn Valley Harness Racing Mid Wales

Jump Straight to Results

After the rain on Friday, it was a glorious afternoon on Saturday for the prestigious Caersws races. The large crowd, in jubilant mood, cheered home the winners of some exceptional racing, on the open track, alongside the river Severn.

The afternoon began with the two Nursery races for horses or drivers beginning in the sport. In the first, Bills Mate (Booth Ammanford) driven by Derek Pritchard has really settled into his stride and continues to impress with Greenhill Nan (Thomas Rhymney) second and Tommy the Dealer with young Elin Bevan, Llanddewi in third. In the second race Rhyds Backchat (Elder Blaencelyn) also driven by Derek Pritchard claimed first prize from the improving Ithon JR (Thomas,Llanbister) with Blackmountain Rose (Gibbons Llanigon) in third.

The first races for the punters were the Novice races which were straight races this week helping these horses to qualify for open racing. The first race went to newly qualified Knights Templar the home-bred, owned, trained and driven by Stephen Williams from Shrewsbury in second was the lightly raced Goldness (Evans Llanwrtyd) while Shakalakaboom Boom (Thomas Llandeilo) was third. George Gentle (Lewis Welshpool) another new recruit for the division took the second Novice race from back marker Kiplyn (Williams Brecon) with Tyssul Opal (Atherton-Rees Narberth) in third.

Three Grade B heats were the next on the racecard the first going to the elegant Ayr Ontario (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) driven by daughter Louisa Barton, in second was Habberley Playboy (Johns & Gittins Srewsbury) while twelve year old Maple Star (Perks Presteigne) aided as usual by Becky Williams claimed third. Brywins Jo Jo (Jones Ammanford) enjoyed another impressive win in the second B heat as Rhun Wilson steered him home in front of last week’s hero Beacon Sorcerer (Bevan Llanddewi) with C U Choteau (Thomas Llanbister) in third. Rhun claimed an early double when he partnered Blackies Boy the home-bred horse belonging to the Prosser family from Libanus winning from the ever reliable Too Hot Today (Jones, Merthyr) while Brywins Luckycharm (Jones Brecon) was third.

The first Grade A heat saw the ever popular Lakeside Pan (Elder New Quay) come home ahead of this season’s newcomer Best of the Fleet (Lewis Welshpool) who is gradually finding his form as he moves up the handicap system, while another newcomer Vally Jasper (Lloyd New Radnor) was third. Strike a Light (Meaney Merthyr) ran a good race in the hands of Andrew Hardwick to win the second A heat from the in form Wellfieldlifestyle (Edmunds Porthcawl) while backmarker Ithon Inmate (Price Brecon) qualified in third. In the third A heat the Irish bred Saorlas Glory belonging to the Guilsfield partnership of Neville and Price, was steered to victory by trainer Debbie Hitchcock, ahead of Artisan (Thomas Llandeilo) with an improving run by The Red Devil (Greenway Michaelchurch Eskley) to claim third.

The Duggan family from Llangunllo have been involved in trotting for decades, and David having recently purchased Evenwood Geezer proved he knows how to pick a good ‘un, by winning the first Baby Novice race from Self Pozest (Hussey Merthyr) with Pendragon (Powell Merthyr Cynog) who has recently joined us, in third. Evenwood Geezer now progresses to the Novice class. In the second Baby Novice race the athletic Dan (Rowlands Talsarn) was first passed the post ahead of Lakeside Glory (Jones Brecon) with Lakeview Meg (Atheton-Rees Narberth) in third.

After the break the optional races which provide such enjoyment for competitors and crowd alike, and which have become a feature of Mid Wales racing, are run. The first, the saddle is gaining in popularity week by week with new horses ‘having a go’. This week one of those, Kiplyn, owned by the Williams family from Brecon and ridden by ex pointer Bridget Lewis claimed a notable victory ahead of Forest Gump (Duggan Llangunllo) another horse making a reputation for himself as a saddle horse with Jake Lobell ridden by owner Gemma White from Porthcawl in third. Kiplyn is another horse who now qualifies for open racing.

The dash with a full complement of nine runners was the next on the card the narrow victory going to the stylish Ithon Gypsy (Jones Llanbister) with Aled Davies on board, in second was the lightly raced Holmes Dreamer (Eggerton Norton Canon) while Arctic Price (Gwatkin Evenjobb) was close in third.

The ladies mile and a half race was another fully supported race with victory for the third year in a row going to Linda Atherton-Rees from Narberth this time on her youngster Tyssul Opal, in second was Bon Jasper (Jones Llanllwni) with Chaps Commander (Jones Brecon) in third.

There were five entries in the Junior race, much to the delight, balanced by anxiety, of the youngster’s connections. Tommy the Dealer (Bevan Llanddewi) with granddaughter Ceri Bevan in the saddle was first passed the post, with Precious Cargo (Gwatkin Evenjobb) and Ellie Tromans in second and Blackfield Buddy (Barton Clunderwen) the usual ride for Anna Lewis placed third.

The day culminated with the two finals. In the Grade B the striking Ayr Ontario (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) was first passed the post in the hands of young Louisa Barton with the ever youthful combination of Maple Star (Perks Presteigne) and Rebecca Williams in second while Blackies Boy (Porsser, Libanus) made up so much ground after a break, his supporters had to settle for third, with ‘if only’ haunting his run.

The Neville and Price family from Guilsfield have been looking for a horse to take up the mantle of Ithon Eagle who gave them so much fun a few years ago and it looks as if Saorlas Glory is ready to accept the challenge as he with trainer Debbie Hitchcock in the seat claimed the Grade A final just in front of the fast finishing Ithon Inmate (Price Brecon) while Wellfieldlifestyle (Edmunds Porthcawl) had to settle for third. So at the end of a superb day of racing the season moves on.

Next week August racing begins with the atmospheric Tregaron meeting on Saturday August 1st while the following Wednesday the Penybont (Wembley of Wales) meeting is on 5th August both starting at 1.30 pm.
