Caersws Racing Results

Jump Straight to Results

Caersws races are always held in a great deal of respect, one of the classics of the season and the most northerly venue on the circuit. Although rain was expected the proceedings were almost completed before the rain dampened the dust for the last few races but did nothing to dispel the overall excitement of the day’s racing.

The first Nursery winner was Immortal Breeze from the long time supporting Williams family from Llanafan with C U Choteau driven by his owner Emrys Thomas from Llanbister in second and Brywins Lucky Charm (Jones Brecon) in third. The Fuffer Man (Evans Brecon) continued to make progress, winning the second nursery ahead of Ithon GB (Williams Brecon) and Danny Blue (Peters Upper Longwood).

The novices were straight races this week with the homebred Merefield Jack (Broome Ludlow) springing a surprise in the first race to beat the favourite Dernol Duke (Wozencraft Llangurig) with recently promoted Precious Cargo (Gwatkin Evenjobb) in third. In the second race Greenhill Emily (Morgan Rhymney) shot to victory ahead of Beacons Sorcerer (Bevan Llanddewi) and Miss Jackpot (Langford Onibury).

The Grade B heats were next on the programme with new recruit Ithon Inmate (Price, Brecon) illustrating his talent for speed has not deserted him in the higher grade partnered as usual by trainer Derek Pritchard Clares Own (Evans Newcastle Emlyn) gave him a run for his money but had to be content with second and Too Hot Today (Jones Merthyr) sped home in third. In the second heat Holmes Dreamer and owner Shane Eggerton from Staunton claimed victory from Mahogany Magic (Davies Dihewyd) and Maple Star (Perks Presteigne).

The winner of the first Grade A heat was the well named Faraway driven by her owner Linda Atherton-Rees, this stable had one of the longest journeys to the races from their base in Pembrokeshire. In second was Bon Jasper (Jones Llanllwni) while Kestrels Rogue (Wilson Llanfihangel ar arth) was third. Fold be Nimble the homebred horse from the Perks stable near Presteigne with stable driver Shane Eggerton at the controls took the second Grade A heat ahead of two Pembrokeshire horses, Meadowbranch Mike (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) and Blackfield Buddy (Barton Clunderwen).

The first Baby Novice race gave Linda Atherton-Rees from Narberth another win as her youngster Nadal was first past the post with Tommy the Dealer (Lewis Llanbister) in second and Ayr Miracle (Price, Welshpool) in third. Habberley Haste the horse recently bought by Ken Lloyd from new Radnor claimed his first victory under the guidance of trainer Andrew Hardwick from Brecon with Goldness (Evans Llanwrtyd) in second and newly promoted The Fuffer Man (Evans Brecon) in third. Kerry Ann Lobell (Greenway Michaelchurch Eskley) gave driver Andrew Hardwick a quick double in the last of the Baby Novice races beating Greenwood Romeo (Duggan Llangunllo) and Grecho (Lloyd Kingswood).

The Dash followed the mid afternoon interval with Ithon Ghost partnered by owner Rhun Wilson from Llanfihangel ar arth claiming victory from The Red Devil (Greenway Michaelchurch Eskley) and Duggans Domino (Gwatkin Evenjobb).

Because of the fear of a thunderstorm the finals were brought forward on the card. In the Grade B Ithon Inmate (Price Brecon) proved yet again to be too good for the rest of the field although chased home by the ‘cardi’ mare Clares Own (Evans Newcastle Emlyn) with Holmes Dreamer (Eggerton Staunton) in third.

The Grade A final was one of the tightest races of the afternoon as the crowd waited for the camera to confirm the winner, which was Fold be Nimble (Perks Presteigne) the horse which is just now returning to the form he showed a few seasons ago with the assistance of driver Shane Eggerton giving him a treble of wins on the day. Just inches behind was last year’s winner Meadowbranch Mike (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) with Blackfield Buddy (Barton Clunderwen) crossing the line a fraction of a second later.

The saddle class prompted Emma Layton a past champion, to come out of voluntary early retirement to ride their own Terripan Hanover (Davies Dihewyd) the little horse with a handicap of 70 yards responded to the gentle touch of his jockey and headed to the front in the home straight securing victory despite the gallant efforts of Bridget Lewis on Dragon Penlan (Barton Clunderwen) a horse gradually making a name for himself in the saddle events, while Wellfield Inspired (Gethin Gilwern) ran on into third.

The Ladies race gave another win for the Nadal – Linda Atherton-Rees partnership from Narberth so giving Linda three wins, making the long trip from Pembrokeshire worthwhile, in second was Kerry Anne Lobell (Greenway Michaelchurch Eskley) with Sable Sam (Tromans Newcastle Emlyn) in third.

The final race of the day was the Junior, this the first Junior of the season and although there were only two runners there was no lack of enthusiasm both on and off the course. The experience of Ellie Bevan on her grandfather’s Beacons Sorcerer (Bevan Llanddewi) paid off as they defended their gate handicap but Celyn Evans on Chaps Commander (Jones Talgarreg) was by no means disgraced managing to catch but not overtake the front running Beacons Sorcerer.

So with the rain setting in, the crowds dispersed, next time to assemble at the low key Tregaron meeting on Saturday August 3rd at 1.30 with the Penybont extravaganza set to take place on Wednesday August 7th starting at 1.30pm.
