Final Race Day of 2012 at Amman Valley

Jump Straight to Results

On what turns out to be the final meeting of the season some important land marks were made on Saturday at the Tai’r gwaith all weather track near Ammanford as straight races replaced the more traditional heats and finals, and a change in running order provided a variation to the programme. It was a beautiful sunny day and the enthusiastic crowd were treated to some good racing including the potential broodmares’ race which rounded off the day.

The Novice race was the first on the card and with a full compliment of nine runners there was plenty of choice for the punters. It proved to be a special day for the Eggerton family from Staunton in Herefordshire, when Wyeside Taurus joined Mid Wales at the beginning of the season, winning on the first occasion, it looked as if he would soon be racing in open company. He has been placed in most of the meetings but the difficulty in moving from the Novice handicap has made him ‘often the bridesmaid but never the bride’ however he with his owner pilot Shane made certain of progression by winning the Novice ahead of Greenhill Ani (Williams Brecon) and Blackies boy (Prosser Libanus).

The first Grade B race saw new horse Vrynwy Taffie owned by long time supported Danny Jones from Talgarreg claim his first success with Mid Wales driven by ‘Cardi’ reinsman Mathew Tromans with Sunnyside Geoff (Williams Brecon)in second and Duggans Domino (Gwatkin Evenjobb) in third. In the second Grade B race Greenhill Cliff (Williams Brecon) from the leading Brecon stable trained and driven by Andrew Hardwick was first passed the post ahead of Wellfield Inspired in the new ownership of Lewis & Walters Ludlow, with Too Hot Today (Jones Merthyr & Harrison Rhymney) in third.

My Imortal the homebred youngster belonging to the Evans family from Brecon, after a very successful season, has graduated to his rightful place in the premiere Grade A and he and owner Mark Evans highlighted their talent with a distinguished win in front of Blackfield Buddy (Barton Clynderwen) and Bon Jasper (Jones Llanllwni).

The Nursery races were fitted into the middle of the card giving the punters time to study the future horses for the sport. In the first Nursery Immortal Ellie and Austin Hughes from Builth Wells showed their credentials winning from Ayr Miracle (Price Dolanog) and Hendre Flyer (Smith Pencader). Shaggy (Davies Drefach) showed his talent for speed by winning the second Nursery ahead of the steadily impressive C U Choteau (Thomas Llanbister) with Glan Kirsty (Evans Talgarreg) in third.

Dragon Penlan (Barton Clynderwen) seems to have overcome his previous injury worries and despite the absence of Robert his usual pilot due to his injury, substitute Aled Davies fired him up to win comfortably from Ayr Melody (Gwatkin Evenjobb) and Tommy the Dealer (Lewis Llanbister). In the second Baby Novice Greenhill Emily (Morgan Rhymney) won from the impressive grey Precious Cargo (Gwatkin Evenjobb) with Grecho (Lloyd Kingswood) in third.

Because of the number of entries the Dash was split into two with the first giving victory to the six furlong specialist C U Boykin (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) partnered by Mathew Herlihy from Merthyr in second was Kickstart (Williams Brecon) with Duggans Domino (Gwatkin Evenjobb) in third. My Imortal (Evans Brecon) claimed his second victory of the day by winning the second part from Chinatown Maori (Jones Aberdare) with third spot being split between Cross Current (Sisto Ammanford) and Springhill Horizon (Lamport Cribyn).

The final race of the day was the ‘crème de crème’ for the equine females of Mid Wales racing as the breed society sponsored Mares race, included seven entries, from the ‘old and tested’ to the ‘young pretenders’. It was one of the ‘young ones’ Miss Jackpot homebred from the Langford stable at Ammanford who led the way, challenges came from all directions but it was only the back marker Strike a Light (Lloyd Kington) who managed to sweep to victory in the last few yards and repeat her victory of last year. Miss Jackpot held on for second with the fast finishing Too Hot Today (Jones Merthyr & Harrison Rhymney) in third and the iconic Believe (Pritchard Rhosgoch) in fourth.

With a week of rain forecast the charity meeting which was to have been held at Penybont has been cancelled so the weather-troubled 2012 trotting season ended last Saturday lets hope the 2013 season which begins on May Day will allow the sunshine gods to ensure the sport continues as it has done for centuries.
