Top Notch Entertainment at Evenjobb

Jump Straight to Results

The race meeting on Saturday which had been transferred to the Evenjobb track because Almeley was unavailable proved to be a wonderful success. Now that racing has resumed after a disastrous month of inclement weather the afternoon provided good entertainment for the partisan crowd as horses and drivers honed their racing skills from latent dormancy.

Alan Peters has been a keen supporter of Mid Wales trotting for many years so it was no surprise when his youngster Habberly Playboy (Johns Loppington) claimed the first Nursery race from Immortal Ellie (Hughes Builth Wells) and Ayr Miracle (Price Welshpool). Glan Kirsty is the latest of the Evans Talgarreg bred youngsters to show great promise by winning the second Nursery from Splight (Rogers Asterton) and Tyssul Pearl (Barton Clynderwen).

The Grade B heats were the first races for the punters and in the first the Williams / Hardwick stables from Brecon sent out Greenhill Cliff to claim a respectable victory from the improving Chinatown Maori (Jones Aberdare) while favourite Too Hot Today (Jones Merthyr & Harrison Rhymney) had to settle for third. In the second heat the brilliant My Imortal (Evans Brecon) showed his superiority beating East of Eden (Pritchard Rhosgoch) and Sunnyside Geoff (Williams Brecon).

In the Grade A race Merrington Man (Thomas Rhymney) ran an impressive race with usual pilot Mark Evans from Brecon to be first over the line from Blackfield Buddy (Barton Clynderwen) and Believe (Pritchard Rhosgoch).

Straight Novice races this week helped to move some of the most impressive horses towards open racing. In the first Miss Thunder (Thomas Rhymney) romped home just ahead of first time in the division Dernol Duke (Wozencraft Llangurig) with Beacons Sorcerer (Bevan Llanddewi) in third. In the second race it was neck and neck as the back markers battled up the home straight with Kickstart (Williams Brecon) gaining his ticket into open company while Wyeside Taurus (Eggerton Staunton) was second with Bon Hasty (Collingwood Huntington) in third.

The first Baby Novice provided Mark Evans with another winning drive as he steered Greenhill Emily (Morgan Rhymney) to victory ahead of Dragon Penlan (Barton Clynderwen) with newly promoted Ayr Melody (Gwatkin Evenjobb) in third. Precious Cargo (Gwatkin Evenjobb) looks to have been a good investment for his owner as she took the second Baby Novice from Charlie Penlan (Lloyd Painscastle) in second and Brywins Starling (Davies Drefach) in third.

With seven weeks since the last saddle race it was great to see a large entry for this ever popular race which gave another chance for Novice horses to qualify for open racing. Elizabeth Collingwood the school teacher from Huntington mounted on her own Novice horse Bon Hasty urged him to the front and held that position ahead of the two horses from the White stable at Porthcawl, Ithon Cracker in second and Boomshakalakka in third.

The six furlong dash gave Dernol Duke (Wozencraft Llangurig) another chance to add glory to his racing career as he and Andrew Bevan were first passed the post in front of local horse Duggans Domino (Gwatkin Evenjobb) and Blackies Boy (Prosser Libanus).

The Grade B final provided just reward for the favourite, My Imortal with owner Mark Evans from Brecon recording his fifth win of the day, in second was the improving Chinatown Maori (Jones Aberdare) while Greenhill Cliff (Williams Brecon) was third.

The final race of the day was the illustrious Free For All where the premier horses of the season battle for the glory, which this year went to Bon Jasper (Jones Llanllwni), in his first season with Mid Wales he is now beginning to make his mark, in second was the little Merrington Man (Thomas Rhymney) while Saunders Playboy (Pritchard Rhosgoch) was third.

So with the season nearing its end, next week racing is at the all-weather track at Tairgwaith near Ammanford on Saturday September 22nd at 1.30 while the season culminates in the usual charity meeting which this year will be held at Penybont, the home of Mid Wales racing, on Saturday 29th September starting at 1.30 pm.
