Rain Leads to Penybont Disapointment

Jump Straight to Results

The first Wednesday in August has meant the ‘Wembley of Wales’ meeting at Penybont since the 1920s and it is still looked forward to now as then. Just as the races were due to begin a storm passed through the valley and after the first couple of races the conditions became difficult.

The afternoon began with the Nursery races in the first the coloured trotter Pilsbury Lady belonging to blacksmith Jim Rogers from Asterton took first place from C U Choteau owned by publican Ray Thomas from Llanbister with Ithon Eddie (Miles Merthyr) in third. In the second race Fitch (Harries Merthyr) ran on well to claim victory from Splight (Rogers Asterton) with Hearts Blessing (Lewis Llandrindod) in third.

The Novice heats followed, in the first backmarker Wyeside Taurus (Eggerton Staunton) won from Kickstart (Williams Brecon) with the chestnut Ithon Hope (Bevan Builth) in third. In the second heat Dragon Fly with owner Horst Weigel from Llanddewi Velfrey in the seat came home ahead of Sable Sam (Tromans Newcastle Emlyn) with Greenhill Ani (Williams Brecon) in third. The appropriately named Rainman guided by his owner Gareth Bevan from Builth Wells claimed the third heat from another aptly named horse Miss Thunder (Thomas Rhymney) with Blackmountain Jess (Gibbons Llanigon) in third.

The first heat of the Grade B was marred by the fall of three horses, none of which suffered serious injury, and in the re-run Maple Star (Perks Presteigne) won from Sunnyside Geoff (Williams Brecon) while My Immortal (Evans Brecon) was third. In the second heat Greenhill Cliff (Williams Brecon) was victorious from Ithon Cracker (White Porthcawl) with Mahogany Magic (Davies Talgarreg) in third.

After another fall it was decided on safety grounds to cancel the rest of the day’s racing. Penybont races are regarded as the highpoint of the season and so it was a great disappointment when the racing had to be abandoned because of the slippery conditions. However the season continues on Saturday August 4th when Tregaron plays host with a 1.30 pm start.
