After the storms and floods of the previous 48 hours it was a pleasure to arrive at the Synod Inn track with perfect ground conditions which produced some fine racing on Sunday 10th June.

The Nursery race for inexperienced horses was the first on the card with the two Greenhill youngsters from the Thomas stable at Rhymney, Emily first and Marina third split by Coalford Pride (Edmunds Porthcawl) an open horse who has not shown his true potential up to now.

In the first Novice heat which was the first race for the punters the big black mare Blackmountain Jess (Gibbons Llanigon) ate up the ground to win from Ithon Gypsy (Jones Llanbister) and the returning Wyeside Taurus (Eggerton Staunton). Horst Weigel who trains Dragon Fly at home at Llanddewi Velfrey took the drive in the second Novice heat to share victory in a dead heat with Kickstart (Williams Brecon) while Brywins Jo Jo ran on into third.

Greenhill Cliff (Williams Brecon) led over the line in the first Grade B heat from C U Boykin (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) and Brywins Snowflake (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey). In the second heat Clares Own (Evans Newcastle Emlyn) dominated the race from in second place the backmarker Meadowland Hasty (Price Brecon) with Ithon Cracker (White Porthcawl) in third.

Last week’s victor Saunders Playboy (Pritchard Rhosgoch) claimed victory in the first heat of the Grade A by a nose from a much improved Coalford Pride (Edmunds Porthcawl) with Merrington Man (Thomas Rhymney) in third. Blackfield Buddy (Barton Clynderwen) plugged on faithfully to snatch victory from Bon Jasper (Jones Llanllwni) with Meadowbranch Mike (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) in third.

The break followed when the heavens opened with a heavy storm, and when racing resumed with the first Baby Novice race conditions were much different, the track was quite squelchy on top but it did not impede the racing as the uphill finish continued to test fitness and staying power.

Sable Sam one of the more experienced ‘babies’ displayed his staying prowess for his family the Tromans from Newcastle Emlyn, the win taking him up into the next class, in second was the much improved Nia Patrol (Williams Ludlow) while Brywins Sweetheart (Jones Ammanford) took third. In the second Baby Novice race again it was a back marker who claimed the race as Derek Pritchard urged She’s some Deal, with much verbal encouragement from owners Sarah & Kelly Thomas of Beulah, to snatch victory from Dragon Penlan (Barton Clynderwen) and Lily Agnes (Wilson Llanfihangel-yr-arth), She’s some Deal also moves into the Novices.

A consolation is an important part of the proceedings at many meetings and this week was no exception especially with only first prize money on offer it was all out from the start, local horse Mahogany Magic with owner Aled Davies from Talgarreg on board that ran under the wire just ahead of his local rival Sandside Cash (Elder New Quay) while A & A’s Beauty (Wilson Llanfihangel-yr-arth).

Derek Pritchard was the only driver who qualified two horses for the final and he elected to drive Blackmountain Jess with trainer Mathew Thomas putting Rhun Wilson on Brywins Jo Jo (Jones Ammanford). Rhun may not have as many wins under his belt as ex champion driver Pritchard but he lost no time in establishing a good rhythm with Jo Jo and they battled the leader Kickstart (Williams Brecon) up the home straight just gaining the verdict while Blackmountain Jess (Gibbon Llanigon) was third.

In the Grade B Derek Pritchard piloted Meadowland Hasty (Price Brecon) and again it was a horse from the Williams stable at Brecon which battled him up the home straight but Hasty claimed the victory from Greenhill Cliff with Clares Own (Evans Newcastle Emlyn) in third. Meadowland Hasty now graduates to the premiere Grade A.

Saunders Playboy (Pritchard Rhosgoch) has proved to be a tough horse this season and worsening conditions did not deter him in the premiere race of the day the Grade A final, he flew up the home straight recording Derek’s fifth win of the day, ahead of the ever threatening Merrington Man (Thomas Rhymney) and the much improved Coalford Pride (Edmunds Porthcawl).

So at the end of the first classic meeting of the season, with some exceptionally close racing, the stage is set for more thrilling racing. Next weekend the racing returns to the Evenjobb track when Old Radnor committee plays host on Saturday June 16th 1.30 pm start.
