Ludlow Racing Results

Jump Straight to Results

The Ludlow meeting is always a rather special event as it is the furthest north and east of the Mid Wales & Border Counties area. Saturday was a lovely day, ideal for racing the ground was good and the long track of 1700 metres (100 yards over a mile) with three uphill sections gave the horses with stamina a decided advantage.

The first Nursery race was won by Ithon Ghost a horse recently purchased by Derek Wellings from Ludlow, Aberelan (Greenway & Hardwick) in the hands of trainee driver Dan Curtis from Brecon was second with Merefield Jack (Broome Ludlow) third. The second race gave Donna White her first experience in a sulky although it was with the experienced Mahogany Duke the hero from Caersws in second was Koh Lanta (Evans, Brecon) with Ithon Gem (Walker, Kelsall) in third.

The punters’ races began with the Novice heats. In the first the Fold stable from Presteigne sent out Fold be Nimble to take top honours from the favourite Clare’s Own (Evans Newcastle Emlyn) with the grey Alpine Heights (Ladek Cleobury Mortimer) in third. The second heat saw Abernant belonging to the Hardwick and Greenway partnership first past the post with Fold American (Perks Presteigne) in second and Duggans Domino (Gwatkin Evenjobb) in third.

In the first of the Grade B heats the beautiful square trotter Belleheir with blacksmith owner Brent Ladek on board swept to victory from battling East of Eden (Pritchard Rhosgoch) while another little one, Master Tom (Owens Shobdon) was third. The extra distance helped Ithon Eagle make up his back mark in the second heat for caravan site owner Doug Neville from Guilsfield, C U Boykin (Hitchcock, Haverfordwest) wasn’t far away in second with Bon Beti (Evans- Jones, Rhymney) in third.

Believe (Pritchard Rhosgoch) claimed the first heat of the Grade A from the grey Live the Dream (Langford Ammanford) and Meadowbranch Mike (Jones, Llanllwni). The result was somewhat overshadowed by the accident to Boomerang whose treatment by the vet resulted in a delay in racing. The racing resumed with the second heat of the Grade A which went to Merrington Man (Thomas Rhymney) with Ithon Ace (Williams Shrewsbury) in second and Wellfield Xpense (Langford Ludlow) in third.

There were three Baby Novice races, and in the first the new entrant Bon Hasty (Collingwood, Huntington) took the spoils from the well fancied Village Tom (Owens Shobdon) with Quicksilver II (Hughes Cwmbach) in third. True Grit (Thomas Tregroes) lived up to his name in the second race to overcome his back mark and just hold off the other back marker The Crusader (Greenway Michaelchurch Eskley) while Littleman II (Wozencraft Llangurig) was in third.

Ithon Ghost (Wellings Ludlow) having moved up, scored his second win of the day, much to the delight of his new owner, Greenhill Megan (Morgan, Rhymney) was in second while Tricksters Dream (Flint Porthcawl) was third.

The three juniors lined up for the next race, the two drivers on the gate while the veteran Scoot Sixty Six and his enigmatic jockey Elin Bevan from Llanddewi trailed 50 yards, but this is a duo that keeps on running and they soon hit the front and secured another victory, while Dale Williams from Brecon had to settle for second with Sunnyside Geoff owned by the Clark family, and Ryan Walters was third on Forgeside Mo (Bird Ludlow). The saddle was won by Classic Day (Miles Merthyr) partnered by Rebecca Williams, while Rebecca Hitchcock piloted Hasty Flight (Williams Llanafan) into second with last week’s winner Ithon Cracker (White Porthcawl) in third.

The Novice final saw the Perks stable from Presteigne providing the combatants around the final bend as Fold be Nimble with Wayne Knox on board just pipped son Joseph Knox on Fold American while Clare’s Own (Evans, Newcastle Emlyn) could only claim third.

The next race was the non-drivers which is a ‘just for fun’ event when the on-lookers can have their chance to show how easy it is! Helen Brisland has served her apprenticeship with Melanie Langford and with the experienced Scoot Sixty Six (Bevan Llanddewi) they led the way over the winning line, in second was the ‘baby’ Bon Hasty with David (Pops) Parker aboard while Allan Gittins from Guilsfield who is quietly earning some driving respect was third with his own Murray.

The B final was another close finish with Ithon Eagle (Neville Guilsfield) just getting up to claim victory and progression into the premiere Grade A, in second was the ever dependable Bon Beti (Evans-Jones, Rhymney) while C U Boykin (Hitchcock, Haverfordwest) was third. The Grade A final provided the finale to the meeting with Melanie Langford driving her father’s popular grey Live the Dream first past the post while the effervescent Shermanator Sam and Mathew Tromans from Newcastle Emlyn was second and Merrington Man (Thomas Rhymney) was third.

The end of a wonderful day’s racing including some really tight finishes.
