Brecon

Jump Straight to Results

Although the sunshine deserted Wales & Border Counties racing at Brecon on Saturday, and the weather was damp and dismal the racing provided plenty of sparkle in the afternoon’s entertainment. The track was well over a mile and the uphill finish combined with the ‘cut’ in the ground meant the horses’ stamina came into play.

Aberelan (Morgan Rhymney) driven by Andrew Hardwick from Brecon won the first race of the day beating the Merthyr horse Highbrooks Teebeau and Inshallah with novice driver Rachel Berry. In the second nursery race the Haverfordwest horse C U Boykin with lady driver Debbie Hitchcock in the seat were winners from The Red Devil (Greenway Michaelchurch Eskley) and Glan Dancer (Evans Talgarreg) on his season’s debut.

In the first Novice heat Emma Langford picked up a new drive on the grey Ayr Force One and brought him over the line first for new owner Trina Haslam from Llanybydder in second was Handsome Butch (Bevan & Sargeant Builth) with Red Adair (Harries Merthyr) third. Local horse Coalford Time took top honours in the second novice heat with owner / trainer Andrew Hardwick driving while last week’s victors Classic Day (Williams Merthyr) were second and Time Traveller (Bevan Llanddewi) was third.

The ever youthful Scoot 66 (Bevan Llanddewi) were winners of the first heat of the Grade B beating I’llalwaysbetheman (Powell Merthyr Cynog) and Falcon Lobell (Davies Huntington). Vodka Express picked up the diesel money by winning the second heat for the Weigel family from Llanddewi Velfrey while another Pembrokeshire stable claimed second prize for Meadowbranch Mike (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) with Shropshire man John Peters and Young Brett in third.

The little chestnut mare Believe (Crowther Llanidloes) romped home in front in the first heat of the Grade A beating the ever consistent Double Top (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) and Best Man (Owens Shobdon). In the second heat of the Grade A the popular black mare Bon Bethan (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) crossed the line in front of Master T J (Gwatkin Evenjobb) and Purple Rain (Edwards Bromfield).

East of Eden the homebred filly from Joint Account with owner Derek Pritchard aboard claimed victory in the first Baby Novice race, she now moves into the Novice class, in second was Hilltop Polly who has been in the placings in 4 out of her 5 runs this year, and again this week it was nearly but not quite as they took second place for the Gittins family from Welshpool while Mahogany Jake (Evans Newcastle Emlyn) was third. The petite Saunders Bliss (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) won the second Baby Novice with Duggan’s Domino (Gwatkin Evenjobb) second and Sam the Man (Tromans Newcastle Emlyn) in third.

The three finals followed, in the Novice there was a great battle as last week’s winner Classic Day took on the front running Ayr Force One with both ladies driving their hearts out it was Emma Langford on the grey Ayr Force One who passed the winning post in front much to the delight of his new owner Trina Haslam from Llanybydder who until recently was more at home in the ‘welsh cob world’. Rebecca Williams on Classic Day had to be content with second while Coalford Time (Hardwick Brecon) took third.

In the Grade B final Vodka Express repeated his heat win for the Weigel family from Llanddewi Velfrey with genial John Peters from Upper Longwood on Young Brett in second and Scoot 66 (Bevan Llanddewi) was third. The Weigel family had a back to back double as daughter Louisa Myers from Bristol piloted Bon Bethan to victory in the grade A final with Master T J (Gwatkin evenjobb) second and Double Top (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) in third. What celebrations for the Weigel family as they returned to Pembrokeshire with their three horses having achieved a 100% record on the day, 5 wins for them at the testing Brecon track.

The day ended with the consolation in which the judges failed to divide the first two horses Forgeside Mo owned by the Bird family from Ludlow and driven by Rebecca Williams from Merthyr and Harry Penlan owned, trained & driven by Robin Lloyd from Painscastle, so after much deliberation a dead heat was declared while Today’s Future (Hughes Builth Wells) was in third place.

Next Saturday June 28th is the prestigious Presteigne meeting held on Broadheath Common 1.30 pm start.
